Charcoal Shapes

I had great fun doing this. By the time I had finished I was black all over!
The point of this drawing was not to create anything in particular, but just to create 3D shapes using only shadows, and without actually drawing any outlines. Its a great way of learning that not everything has an obvious edge.
I didn't think I'd enjoy charcoal, but somehow being covered from head to toe in dirty black marks took me right back to childhood!

Note from Admin:
Wow, you have been busy! This is one exercise that I have yet to try - drawing with no outlines. This is good. It's good that art is taking you back to your childhood, it gives you that extra zest for life.

illusion is the name of the game. Don't just put shadows in, you could do well with circular shaped shadings for this sketch and lighten some of the shading up,

How did you manage to keep the shapes without drawing the outlines? It might be a good excercise to try out. the shading is great too.

Super Shading
by: Jim

The shading and contours are spot on. Perhaps you also ended shading yourself in charcoal. Thank you for the drawing.

Nice one Sandra

Hi Sandra,
you've got a good eye there.
Charcoal is good fun, I can't keep pencil clean never mind charcoal. I used SWIMBO's hair spray to fix it but it has usually got everywhere before then. It's lot cheaper than artists fixative.
Cheers
Bill.
