Drawing Faces

by Sarah Gorham
(Philadelphia)

I've been trying to draw this picture, but i can never get the face to look real. I have been having trouble with the nose, eyes, and just making it look like an actual person.

***Answer From Kerry:

Hello Sarah
Portrait drawing is the toughest thing of all to learn. Most expert portrait artists will tell you it takes years to acquire a real talent for this type of artwork.

I've been practicing portraits for ages too and I'm not the one to give you any sage advice. My recent efforts were done with the aid of a grid and that's the closest I've come to getting a good likeness.

I'd suggest that if you have any drawing books at home, go through those to see what that author advises. Everyone has a different way of doing faces.

Some of the more experienced artists here may have some good advice for you so I'll leave the floor open for discussion...

Wow!

Hi Sarah,

I know that all of us like to be perfect in any of our creation, but yours are magnificent. I was thinking that one was the picture that you were sketching about, not the real portray. I wish to have that kind of trouble in mine; you are a real artist ……

Sincerely

Carmen

Understanding??
by: Michael Betz

I may be misunderstanding, but I think she is saying that this is not her drawing...but she has been trying to draw it, but can't get it right. Am, I correct in percieving that from what you said?
At any rate, if this is your drawing....hell...give me some advice on drawing faces. Because it is absolutely fantastic professional quality work.
If it's not....yes, faces are exceptionally difficult. The biggest key is to not outline the facial features, like I used to. It makes them look cartoonish. I would suggest, and I am by no means a professional artist...start tackling individual facial parts first. Practice drawing just an eye....then just a nose....then just a mouth. Also, if you have the chance, go to your local library and look for a book called "How To Draw Lifelike Portraits From Photographs" by Lee Hammond. I gaurantee you this book will do nothing but improve your portrait drawings. You can try some online tutorials, but the problem I found with those is, these artists that are putting out these tutorials, #1 - they all do it differently and you end up with conflicting techniques and #2 - they all make it look so easy, that when you give it a try, it just never turns out like theirs and that can be discouraging. Be careful of that trap with online tuts. I would love to see some of what you have drawn if you feel like posting some. And, I am sure I can speak for everyone, we would love to see how your interpretation of this picture comes out.

Impressive!
by: Emilie Leming

Quite frankly, I think that this piece is quite good. I know that Jim has had trouble w/faces as well (unless they're aliens ; ) But seriously, I think that's this is extremely well done... perhaps a moment frozen in time but I think you've really gotten it right. I like it a lot! Send it to a book publisher as an illustrator. Best wishes!
