Portrait of a Musician (guitarist)

About a year ago one of my Brothers talked me into trying my hand at watercolour painting, now that I've retired and have loads of time on my hands. He bought me a cotman painting set.

The problem was, I didn't know if I could draw or not. I've never really tried.

At school I chose photography over art and have been on the photography path ever since.

Anyway, this is one of the very first drawings I attempted. I didn't know what to draw so I drew me! I must admit I surprised the hell out of my Brother but not half as much as I surprised myself!!!...who knew it?? I could draw!!...well to a fashion anyway...now It's taken over my life!!!!....

**Note from Kerry:
Boshy, if this is your first attempt at a portrait, I'm gob-smacked!

If that is the very first picture you did, I am gobsmacked! I just don't believe it. I am an ok artist myself but the first pic I drew was terrible and yours is brill. Tell me how you do it so well, please?

Yes please

Hi Boshy!

That would be fantastic if you wrote how you achieved such a great portrait drawing. I'm like you, I devour everything there is to do with drawing, I read every single book and go through each one thoroughly. I take copious notes. I just can't get enough. ...So, anything you can share will be gratefully received. ...Thank you!

I forgot to mention
by: Anonymous

I don't know what to say...thank you for your kind words I find them really inspiring and it makes me want to Draw more (if that's possible)...One thing I forgot to say though is that this portrait looks ok but It doesn't look too much like me hehehe...the long hair and the tash are correct and any of my mates that have seen it say instantly that It's me...but they are mates so they would say that wouldn't they?

...Now I look back at it I can see how amateurish it really is...I did it almost a year ago and I see mistakes and lots of things that could have been drawn better but at the time I was over the moon with it for one reason and one reason only...I managed to get the shading on the skin to blend seamlessly...It's quite easy actually and I may write a little instruction page on how to do it if anyone is interested?

...all the best Boshy...

Way Cool!

Handsome fellow. Brave too to start with a likeness. Faces are hard enough without trying to make it look like someone specific.

I agree with Kerry as to your talent Boshy.

And I'm thoroughly enjoying the British and Aussie slang! Seriously, I think portraits are very difficult, and yours looks really good, Boshy. The lines and shading around the nose and mouth are difficult to capture accurately, but I think you've done it quite well. Good job! How delightful to discover such incredible talent lying dormant all these years!
