Portrait of Kindness and Wisdom

Mother

This is a drawing of my Mother. She is one of the kindest people one would ever hope to know. And after raising 7 of us kids she definitely is wise.

I don't have the hair quite right, but am trying to figure out how to draw a perm.

I am drawing portraits of everyone in my family as a Christmas gift. No small feat either. There are somewhere around 34 of us now with all my nieces and nephews!

I'll post one every now and again.

And Kerry, Thanks so much for the comments and encouragement you give to me. You have a wonderful site that is very helpful.

***Note from Kerry:
Gee, thanks Patty. I'm so glad you are enjoying my site.

Hair is tricky to draw but it's not impossible. You can darken the roots (by going over existing lines unevenly, in direction of hair) and sprinkle some darks on the tips. You work from light to dark by going over your strokes. You can also use your eraser to lighten some areas. It can be great fun to do. You can also try different grade pencils. Drawing hair is a bit like basket weave, the hair goes over and under.

I'm no expert but that's what I've learned so far. I hope it helps you.

Your Mom looks beautiful. It seems to me that you have captured a good likeness. Well done, Patty.

This is a perfect drawing. It's too hard to get a portrait to look realistic (but I draw them anyway). Great job! I think that you should try loose curly lines to draw a perm. Don't draw a shape for the hair at first, but limit it enough that it looks like hair. Eventually you can draw curly hair using highlights and shadows insread of simple lines.
