Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys

I drew this portrait of Alicia Keys a couple years ago. I was trying to capture her eyes and the detail of her hair.

There is just something about her that always catches my eye. I am decent at shading. Sometimes it looks right the first time and other times it can take forever, but when its done right, it looks photo realistic. The actual drawing looks a lot better.

**Note from Kerry:
Wow Jason, it's fabulous! You certainly did an excellent job on the eyes. It does look like a photo, well done!

Portrait Of A Friend On A Lazy Afternoon

I miss our college days and my friends. I still remember the first day in the college. We were so afraid to face the so called Ragging. Slowly we were used to it.

I made some great senior friends during the entire procedure though. This sketch is dedicated to one of those great senior friends that I made in my engineering days.

**Note from Kerry:
This is very well done, Abhirup. I would love to be able to do a portrait like this!

Drawing Of An Actress

Hi,
This is my favorite drawing I've ever drawn.
It's a portrait of an actress but I forgot her name.

I'm a girl from Belgium. (So my English sentences will not be that good.)

I hope you like it.

Note from Admin:

I do like it Flo, it's very good.

Portrait of Kate Beckinsale

I was just checking some portrait drawings on the internet and I saw a site where a person drew this drawing of Kate, and I thought it was awesome to be able to draw something like this. So I searched for the photo on google and tried to draw it. The first few times it didn't go well and eventually the third time I drew it, I was satisfied. This is the third drawing.

**Note from Kerry:
Gosh Nakul, are you serious? Did you really draw this? It's fantastic!

Johnny Depp

by Shane
(Seattle WA)

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp

My Step Daughter is 17 today. I made this portrait of Johnny Depp for her birthday. It can be found easily on the Internet. However I changed the background and the piano. She absolutely loved her birthday gift.

I used a regular number 2, a 9b this time because I really wanted a very dark background, and a mechanical pencil. This drawing took me 20 hours to complete, mainly because the nose and chin needed extra attention.

So compare this portrait to that of my very first portraits and see the growth in my talent.

***Note from Kerry:
Shane, I think a drawing is the most personal gift you can give. I am sure your step daughter will treasure this, always.

Portrait Drawing of Aaliyah

This is a nice pencil drawing I did of Aaliyah recently. I think I did a great job with this drawing, I love the way I did the hair mostly. I really love to draw, I been drawing since I was 8, and I 'm really a big fan of Aaliyah, so I decided that I wanted to draw her.

**Note from Kerry:
Good job Cashandra! Portraits are quite hard to do so you are really going well.

My Nephew Danny

Danny My Nephew

Danny My Nephew

I've been away from drawing for at least 10 years and I've just got that "artists itch" to put pencil to paper.

So, I bought some realistic drawing how to books and some pro pencils, which I never owned before I might add, and I went to town!

***Note from Kerry:
Hi Nancy, it looks like you're very good, I don't know how you stayed away so long!

ps. I'm sorry, each drawing requires it's own story. You are welcome to re-submit each one again and talk more about your subjects, if you like.

Portrait Of My Friends

I always liked drawing, but only in the beginning of this year (2008) I started taking it more seriously.

I began drawing portraits in January 2008, and this is the last one I have drawn. I did it as a gift to offer to my dear friends.

***Note from Kerry:
HI Clara,
I am sure your friends will be delighted with their gift. That is such a lovely gesture. I like it, I think you've done a great job.

Up And Down

by k.j.chilton
(heysham,lancashire,uk)

Up And Down

Up And Down

I was given two new books for Christmas, and I came across these two together, so I had a go at drawing them in my own way.

When my grandaughter, who is 4 years old, saw the drawings she said "this one is me grandad, and that one is Seb" (my grandson), I have to say neither look like the drawings at all - possibly their hair styles at a pinch.

So I thought I would put them on show for you to have your say on what you feel about them.

I do feel that I never really try and finish off a drawing and therefore they do tend to be a bit rough around the edges - if you know what I mean.

Anyway A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of you out there in this big wide world, and hopefully a very healthy one too.
ken

***Note from Kerry: (31.12.2008)
Ken, what a delightful gift, to be given art books for Christmas. Aren't they addictive? I love your drawings. To draw heads is a difficult thing and I actually appreciate rough edges, on any drawing. I think it adds more appeal.

Happy New Year to you too, Ken. Thanks for participating here and I hope we see more of your wonderful drawings next year.

First Portrait

Portrait of a Musician (guitarist)

Portrait of a Musician (guitarist)

About a year ago one of my Brothers talked me into trying my hand at watercolour painting, now that I've retired and have loads of time on my hands. He bought me a cotman painting set.

The problem was, I didn't know if I could draw or not. I've never really tried.

At school I chose photography over art and have been on the photography path ever since.

Anyway, this is one of the very first drawings I attempted. I didn't know what to draw so I drew me! I must admit I surprised the hell out of my Brother but not half as much as I surprised myself!!!...who knew it?? I could draw!!...well to a fashion anyway...now It's taken over my life!!!!....

**Note from Kerry:
Boshy, if this is your first attempt at a portrait, I'm gob-smacked!

This is my first portrait attempt. The shading is not too good, but I am happy with it. What do you think?

***Note from Kerry:
Hi Ken, your first attempt is way better than my first go at portraits! I can see your style emerging and I like it. I also think you've done a really good job of the hand. Keep going!

This is the first time that I have drawn a sketch from a picture. I have started drawing again, after 3 years layoff.

**Note from Kerry:
Your friend looks beautiful, Abhirup. You have done a really nice job.
ps. Abhirup, your College drawing didn't have a story so it can't be accepted, I'm sorry. You need to write more than one line to make it an interesting page.

Roman Woman Drawing

I found this picture online, and thought it would be fun to draw! It is one of my favorites!

Have any of you used water color pencils? I can never get them to look right. Do any of you have any suggestions?

**Note from Kerry:
Good sketch Anna! Are you using pen or pencil, or both?
I've had a little dabble with water color pencils. I found that you must use good quality water color paper for it to be a successful exercise.

Update: Anna wrote to me to let me know she used only pencil for this sketch. Thanks Anna!

Portrait Of Gina

by Jean
(Cambridgeshire)

Portrait Of Gina

Portrait Of Gina

I used to draw, draw, draw when I was a teenager. (I am now 52)

Then I gave up, until my sister talked me into going on a painting week-end with her, about 4 years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I took on tasks to paint people's houses, but with pressure of work I gave up.

I have now started again, and hope to give up work, or find a part-time job so I can start my own business selling my paintings (anyone have any tips/ideas etc)?

I found this picture of my niece - Gina - who will be in her thirty's now (hence the horrible dress)! This is the first time I have tackled a portrait, and was quite surprised it wasn't as hard as I thought.

**Note from Kerry:
Hi Jean, this is well done for a first go at a portrait. Good on you, I'm so pleased you have taken up drawing again. Your life will definitely become richer.
