I've been practicing drawing a lot lately and want to get better at drawing people realistically.

I borrowed this book from a friend, I can't remember who it was by, but it was amazing. Anyway, I followed the steps and came out with these. I know that they aren't great but they are better than what I can normally churn out, I was quite pleased with them.

So yeah if anyone can recommend any books or anything that are good for realistic drawings that would be really helpful and I think I could do with all the help I can get lol

Note from Kerry:
Hi Rachel
Well, wow, you certainly don't show that you are struggling with portrait drawing! You know what I like best? ...The page with all the bits and pieces on it - I don't know why, but they are the types of pages that I like to study in someone's sketchbook. I realize that the other drawings are snippets from that page but I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed it.

When Michael sees this page, he will fall over himself to tell you that Lee Hammond is his most favorite author/book for learning portrait drawing.

There is this one that teaches you how to draw lifelike portraits from photos:

If you visit the link, you will be able to take a peek inside the book to see if you're going to like it.
OR
This book is about drawing real people...

I've never doubted your drawing ability but gee, you show great promise with these drawings of yours. Keep going Rachel, you're doing great!

Sidenote:
I did receive your email, thanks Rachel. I am so far behind with my site work therefore putting drawings up on the site takes preference to most other things including emails. I figured you'd rather I upload your drawings rather than write back... heh.

Btw, I have not got a profile page here for you. The system says there is one pending but when I click on it, it is empty. That usually only happens when an IP has been banned, so it's a puzzle.

I would love for you to have a profile page so if you don't mind re-sending, that would be great. -- I look forward to seeing you!

As an artist myself
by: Bill Richards

Your sketches are fine as sketches. The biggest thing about doing portraits is proper shading. Learn where and how the highlights hit the eyes, nose etc... the biggest thing I tell my art students is to "draw in the shadows" - the light will be what's remaining.

Ha ha Rachel, so you were actually fishing for Michael to come running to your aid with his recommendations? You have made me smile and it feels good to have this banter, thank you. Yeah, I think we've read his recommendations in just one or two places, hey? (Don't take offense Michael, we're just jiving ya.)

You deserve the compliments Rachel, your drawings are good and I'm excited for you to tackle the whole figure drawing range. It's tough going but once you get the hang of it, it really is worthwhile. Now I say that in a hopeful way because I am still practicing and I'm not there yet!

by: Michael Betz

Lee Hammond?? Lee Hammond?? Hmmmm....the name doesn't ring a bell...let me see....oh...ok...I remember...she's a blonde artist huh? hehe....j/k.....yup...no question who I would have recomended, or even what book. You all nailed it......ok...I guess I need to switch up my personality a bit.....got to keep all you Ladies on your toes....;)
Rachel, I am so impressed with these. You have no idea how happy I am to see you branching out and learning new skills....I just know you will do so well at this...I have the utmost faith in you.....
But, yes, I do recommend Lee Hammond, and also check out Carrie Parks. And if you are feeling particularly adventerous.....try J.D. Hillberry. But as I always say on J.D. Hillberry....don't go there unless you are ready for some extremely advanced stuff......
