James Dean

The Rebel Without A Cause
The next drawing I did when I was only 12 years old was that of James Dean. I found a black & white picture of The Rebel Without A Cause, inside a magazine that I no longer remember which one it was. As soon as I saw it, it called out to me by saying "Shane you must draw me." So I did.
Notice on Lady In the Sky and James Dean, that there are no real boundaries bordering the drawings. I really knew nothing about drawing back then, so I never knew it was a common practice to create borders around illustration. So I never adopted that practice until I was 16. On a regular bases that is.
This drawing took me an entire day to complete. I had such a miserable time getting the nose right, on the 1956 star of the movie Giant. I still have a hard time drawing noses. Its such a crucial part in the creation of a portrait.
***Note from Kerry: This is amazing. It's unreal that you did this when you were 12!
